The Art of (Cyber) Warfare: The U.S. vs. Iran, a war by proxies, there is still time for diplomacy, but the clock is ticking!

1. US Drone Key Logger Virus - http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/virus-hits-drone-fleet. I now consider this cyber warfare incident the top incident because the implications of this incident with the recent story on page 1 of the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/ with a picture of the alleged U.S. Drone by Iranian military forces. My theory and Lance http://www.linkedin.com/pub/lance-miller/3/b38/5b6 a friend with the group Black Hat & Infosec agrees; this incident may be related to that story. For video on this incident click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MrVihH3r3g My theory is the key logger virus exploit information may have been sold to Iran. Then using an electro magnetic pulse http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro-magnetic_pulse or other cyber warfare electronic counter measures against the downed Drone, Iran took control of the alleged U.S. Drone (if it is a U.S. Drone) and landed it because in the picture on the front page of the The New York Times the UAV appears to be intact. This has serious implications in command and control of these UAVs and the possiblity they could be disabled, and worse turned against whoever controlls the drone(s) during this flight and future flights. The first thing I would do if I was an IT person on the drone program with the U.S., NATO, or whoever the drone belongs is to do a security assessment of any incidents of drones not flying according to their flight plan before this latest drone incident, with a time line of when the US Drone Key Logger Virus was discovered. The second thing I would do in the IT security audit is to investigate and record suspicious LAN/WAN activity on Windows, UNIX, Linux, Oracle Sparc servers, or mainframe servers at the Drone bases, along with doing an inventory of all Drone control equipment that is in use, being repaired, or that is missing, destroyed and talk to the military personnel & defense contractors in charge of destroying damaged equipment and also making sure any possible thefts of Drone equipment have been reported. The last thing would be to account for the possiblity that any planned UAV missions may be compromised and ASAP have built into any future UAV flights equipment, & software that will by default have the UAVs self destruct automatically if the remote pilots lose control of the UAVs for longer than 30-45 minutes unless a bio-metric image of say a finger print or eye scan built into the keypad/joystick is pressed (or for eyes scanned) by the pilot and sent to the UAV in flight if a similar security procedure is not already in place. NASDAQ attack – a few months ago there were media reports on a cyber attack on the NASDAQ http://www.nasdaq.com/ , this is critical infrastructure for the U.S. and world financial markets as NASDAQ is where some key hi-tech companies such as Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/ are listed on the stock market http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2011/02/did-nasdaq-hackers-grab-holy-grail-of-insider-information/1

Stuxnext Iran Attack – Last year a computer worm/virus named Stuxnext attacked a nuclear plant in Iran, the political leadership admitted the attack had slowed down progress at the facility. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/8262853/Stuxnet-virus-attack-Russia-warns-of-Iranian-Chernobyl.html. Iran is a major supplier of oil to China and this has implications in regard to the UN Security Council as China is a permanent member. There have been media reports that the original Stuxnext virus hackers or someone with access to the Stuxnext code have made a new update to the virus, we will let you know as we gather more information. Google China network attack – The Wide Area Network of Google http://www.google.com/ in mainland China was hacked and Google reported the incident to the U.S. government after checking with other U.S. companies based in China and finding they had been attacked also. This was a key moment in cyber warfare as President Obama formulated a more sophisticated cyber warfare doctrine for the U.S. Armed Forces as a result of this attack, and Google actually relocated to Hong Kong, China from mainland China as a result of the attack. This has lead to a greater coordination between the U.S. armed forces and private companies in protecting key critical infrastructure of the U.S. civillian economy. China has long had a very sophisticated IT approach, which led to them building the Great Firewall of China to defend against an asymmetric network attack in China, to prevent attacks such as the attack against Google. 5. Baidu Iranian Cyber Army Attack – The Chinese search engine Baidu has been attacked by a group called the Iranian Cyber Army. I am still researching this story for more details but allegedly a group called the Iranian Cyber Army attacked Baidu, China’s most popular search engine, China is still conducting a computer forensics investigation to see if this group is actually affiliated with the government of Iran. http://www.forbes.com/2010/01/13/baidu-cyber-attack-markets-technology-china.html. This leads to what makes cyber attacks so effective, because attacks can be routed through the computers of businesses, governments, and individuals who may be unaware that the attacks are being launched from their PC networks, governments who are attacked have to do computer forensics analysis before their response or they may strike the wrong target, which may the true attacker’s intent. At this point with the hand of Iran being shown in Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon, it is pretty good guess that Iran is the culprit.

6. Estonia Denial of Service Attack – This attack is crucial in the understanding of cyber warfare. Estonia was former part of the USSR/Soviet Union, now Russia http://moscow.usembassy.gov/ that got into a dispute over the price they would pay Russia over natural gas shipped to Europe, and the pipelines that Russia paid for were on Estonia’s soil. To make a long story short, while the payment dispute over natural gas shipped over the pipelines was in progress, Estonia suffered Denial of Service attacks that shut down vital government services and dropped Estonia to it’s knees http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9721429-1.html. This was a key cyber battle because it made Europe aware of it’s vulnerability when states like Estonia go rogue from Russia, and make Europe's natural gas supplies vulnerable. Russia has offered aid to NATO http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/index.htm to try to resolve the situation in Libya before the death and the overthrow of Libiya's previous government by NTC.

The cyber weapons/tactics that were used in Egypt (http://www.sis.gov.eg/En/Default.aspx or http://egypt.usembassy.gov/) are social network sites; for example Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ (Egypt has one of the largest groups of Facebook users in the world), Google, software applications (The Egyptian armed Forces arrested a Google http://www.google.com/ executive who was later released, it is not know if he was just acting on his own) and apparently as I stated in my last blog there appears to have been some coordination with Hamas and Iran with the events in Egypt, and now Bahrain. The unrest in Egypt, Saudia Arabia, Libya, Bahrain and most recently Syria was the first phase of war with Iran, the cyber war is now a shooting war in Syria, and covert in Egypt with sabotage of the natural gas line from Egypt to Isra-el. The conflict in Libya seems to be a trial run by NATO http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/index.htm vs. Iran if there is not a settlement on Iran's pursuit of atomic power, and there has recently been an attempt to view the the Lybia conflict as an attempt to rally Africa to view this battle as an attempt to re-colonize Africa. For those who doubt this tactic will work, think again it will. I will describe why in my next blog.........

Egypt..The Art of (Cyber) War

The events of the past few days in Egypt have introduced a new weapon in the field of Cyber War. I will call this new weapon/tactic Civillian IT Blitzkreig vs the Blitzkreig introduced by the Germans in World War II with the perfected weapons of Tank Warfare and Dive Bombers striking quickly to drop bombs followed by tanks/soldiers to take land quickly before the enemies like Poland could respond.

While the new weapons/tactics that were used in Egypt are social network sites; for example Facebook http://www.facebook.com/ (Egypt has one of the largest groups of Facebook users in the world), Google, software applications (The Egyptian armed Forces arrested a Google http://www.google.com/ executive who was later released) along with a coordination that leads us to believe it was a planned operation with multiple groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Communists, College Students, Union Activists, and Civil Libertarians according to various reports worldwide (Mr. Shines is a registered journalist with the PR Newswire), along with some possible help from Hammas/Iran that will become a Case Study in Asymetric Warfare that will be studied at War Colleges in the U.S., UK, China, Russia, Germany, Iran and around the world. In the book Art of War available on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/ it is described how Sun Tzu a Chinese General from ancient times felt breaking the enemy's will without raising a sword/(firing a shot in modern times) is the best victory because it saves resources, and this seems to be the case with Hosni Mubarak the former President of Egypt. Former President of Egypt in the 1970s Anwar Sadat Mubarak's former commander when he was in the Egyptian Airforce was killed in a hail of machine gun fire & grenades that President Mubarak was lucky to survive even though he may have been wounded (To view video of the attck from YouTube http://www.youtube.com/ click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhu-YgCyPz4), but General Mubarak still managed to survive the attack on President Sadat, take charge, and become President of Egypt surviving a takeover and that is why Egypt has had a crackdown for so many years - hopefully this transition in Egypt will be peaceful, democratic and the peace treaty with Isra-el & Egypt will stand. The only question now is who launched this Civillian IT Blitzkreig with civillians/insurgents melting quickly back into the local population, and what lessons will be learned in how to defend against this type of attack other than China's approach, which led to them building the Great Firewall of China to defend against just such an asymetric attack. Russia has also suffered an attack at the Moscow Airport, we give our condolences to the people of Russia, along with the family and friends of any who were injured or died in the attack at the Moscow Airport; Moscow is the capital of Russia.

Nokia & HP Together Forever...... ?

As I read the headlines in the Wall Street Journal http://www.wsj.com/ the thought occurred to me; could Nokia the leader in smart phones in Europe and HP a major IT vendor in the U.S. merge? Maybe..the big hurdle would be government regulations and who would be in charge. CEOs love mergers because they make out like bandits when it comes to $$$ but when it comes to who is in charge that is when things tend to break down, along with a country loosing control of a major asset such as Nokia http://www.nokia.com/. NYSE conquered by the Germans?....Nein! (German for No!)

Speaking of regulations, the Germans made an offer to buy the New York Stock Exchange. This proposed purchase would allow publicly companies to evade U.S. financial regulations that have and are being put in place since the 2008 Stock market crash after the economies around the world are finally crawling out one of the deepest holes since the great depression. This is important from a technology standpoint because stock broker trading software platforms such as Archipelego used on the New York Stock Exchange Euronext are some of the most sophisticated software, and run on the most advanced computer mainframes in the world, from companies such as IBM http://www.ibm.com/. For investors who think this is a good idea for the U.S. look no further that Chrysler before Chrysler was purchased by Daimler Benz. Chrysler had billions on it's balance sheet and was a good company when Daimler took it over and a few years later Daimler Benz spit Chrysler out broke, after having taken the best of their automotive IT technology and was a symbolic victory against the U.S. (Chrysler produced the Jeep that help defeat the Germans in WW II). Sync is Microsoft's and Ford's answer to OnStar the telematics leader created by GM that allows users to access services from their car like e-mail; Sync also allows for your smart phone contacts to be Sync(chronized) with your car phone contacts, hence the name. There was also something called the Magic Pad http://www.apple.com/ I am still investigating it. The software section of the Apple store was much bigger than the software area I am used to seeing in computer/electronics stores.

Now here is how I see the browser wars. Right now Apple is positioned to win the battle on the smart phone front (RIM needs to make some hard decisions soon because of Apple & Android), and even challenge Microsoft's once invulnerable position as the dominant office suite on the smart phone desktop but Google is coming on strong with the Android browser, Droid smart phones, and the Android development platform; there is also a big community of Android developers and there are a lot of Android applications (or apps). This smart phone analysis is for the U.S., Europe is a different ballgame with Nokia http://www.nokia.com/ being a leader there with it's proprietary os for Nokia smart phones (I own a Nokia as well as a Palm Centro & iPod Touch) and the symbian OS as an alternative for other Nokia smart phones. An excellent article on Android vs. Apple in smart phones is Google's Android vs. Apples iOS in Electronic Design http://www.electronicdesign.com/ in the 11/04/2010 issue. Back to the U.S., the question is will Apple get a little help from Oracle's Larry Ellison now that Oracle http://www.oracle.com/ owns MySQL; the reason I say this is the Apple office suite has lacked a competitive database product to match up with Microsoft Access and with MySQL that problem could be solved. There would MySQL for the Office Suite for Apple iPhones and the Oracle database for PCs/laptops and servers. The question is will Oracle co-operate with Apple or will they fall into conflict because by purchasing Sun Microsystems, Oracle has now entered the smart phone market and PC business with Sun's Ultra Sparc hardware. Also Mr. Ellison could pre-load the Sun Staroffice application suite on Sun hardware (also Dell, Rim & Android smartphones) integrating the Oracle database or the MySQL database into the Sun StarOffice application suite to compete with Microsoft Office. Microsoft finally seems to have a credible smart phone OS with the Windows 7 os for the smart phone and was smart to integrate the Zune music player and X-Box 360 into the Windows 7 smart phone. Microsoft's ace in the hole may be the new version of Office Communication Server in combination with their Windows 7 smartphone along with Microsoft Exchange Server & Share Point Server 2010.

Smart Phone Security Concerns & The Microsoft Office 2010 Detroit event

The Microsoft Detroit 2010 event was great; this is the 3rd post in a series describing the seminar. The seminar was opened by Mr. Matthew Hoster, who was excellent! His blog is http://blogs.technet.com/matthewms. He advised the attendees on Microsoft Office 2010, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Outlook 2010, and SharePoint 2010. The second presenter who is based at Microsoft's HQ in Seattle, Washington was Ms. Jennifer Kim who told the audience that Microsoft Outlook now has a social connector for Web 2.0 technologies like Face book http://www.facebook.com/, MySpace http://www.myspace.com/, LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/, and Microsoft's own social network tool called Mingle. We were also given copies of the Windows 7 operating system http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx that was a 64 bit version. Speaking of smart phones I said I would go over best practices for Black Berry administrators in this blog but I will save that for the next blog because the Blackberry has been in the news a lot lately.

It can be safely said that when governments are mad at RIM because of their inability to monitor your instant messaging, & web browsing services your communications are secure. In other smart phone security news the Nokia prototype smart phone case where the Moscow based blogger Mr. Eldar Murtazin made negative comments about the Nokia N8 http://www.nokia.com/ smart phone is ongoing with the Russian police investigating after Mr. Murtazin did not respond to inquires from Nokia as to how he got the N8. The Nokia Russian homepage is http://www.nokia.ru/. We will follow the Nokia & Blackberry stories as they unfold and keep you posted. Back to the Microsoft conference they also introduced the Windows 7 smart phone and I now have the hardware specification for the Windows 7 smart phone. The specifications are:

Microsoft Share Point Server was covered at the Microsoft Office Detroit 2010 conference but many people wonder; what is Share Point Server? Share Point Server is a valuable business tool that can do the following:
1. Allows collaboration at your company
2. Can be used to set up a company Portal.
3. Allows search for company documents (think Google).
4. Allows enterprise content management and when you consider the Wiki leaks incident in regards to secret
U.S. military documents for the war in Afghanistan leaking to the public, this is a vital task.
5. Allows you to do Business Process Management (BPM) to manage your company more efficiently.
6. Allows you to collect Business Intelligence (BI) on your organization to spot trends

Also I found out at a Compuware http://www.compuware.com/ conference I was invited to, that SharePoint server can be used for SOX (Sarbanes Oxley) financial reporting requirements for publicly traded companies. In the next blog I will give Blackberry tips and go over using SharePoint server for people who are still not quite sure what SharePoint Server is and how it can help their businesses cut costs.

Why RIM & Avaya Nortel or Ericson AB Nortel should do a deal

The recent HP http://www.hp.com/ acquisition of Palm http://www.palm.com/ in a blockbuster deal and Dell’s purchase of Perot Systems along with Windows 7 improved smart phone user interface puts pressure on RIM, maker of the Blackberry smart phone to do a deal. Why you may ask? I will now cover this in detail. The HP deal for Palm was done to give HP options on their smart phone platform because Microsoft is cutting deals with other hardware makers & Microsoft’s goal to have it’s smart phone os on as many phones as possible differs from HP’s goal of having customers prefer HP’s smart phones, laptops, & desktop computers. For the Dell purchase of Perot Systems this gives Dell a greater entry into corporate IT services and Dell has already created Dell branded smart phones as the desktop and net book computer market has become a commodity businesses while smart phones have better profit margins. We have not even mentioned the threat of the Apple iPhone, and Google smart phones powered by Android to the RIM Blackberry.

A recent move by RIM to license it’s Blackberry Enterprise Server Express for free download (see a recent ad in Information week http://www.informationweek.com/ was a smart move). The reason being Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/ has an advantage by having the outlook client on the majority of desktop, laptop, net book computers sold in the U.S. along with it’s Windows 7 smart phones. Also Microsoft Exchange Server, a competitor to the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), is already installed in many corporate IT departments along with Windows Server and by RIM/Blackberry allowing the BES to be downloaded for free this takes away switching costs for IT departments moving from Microsoft Exchange Server to BES.

Now, on to the question of why RIM should do a deal with Ericson AB (Nortel) http://www.ericsson.com/ or Avaya (Nortel) http://www.avaya.com/ the reason is because Nortel was a Canadian based company with a large hardware installed base, the largest North American telecom provider before going into bankruptcy. Nortel has a large installed hardware base in North America & Canada which is what RIM will need to stay competitive as the IT & Telecom world continues to consolidate, and it is better to pick a partner than be pushed. HP Makes a move on Palm

HP Makes a Move on Palm

Recently HP http://www.hp.com/ purchased Palm http://www.palm.com/ in a blockbuster deal. This was a deal that was going to be done by someone once the sales numbers came out on Palms newest smartphones. The shame is this did not have to be, at one time Palm was the leader in PDAs with the Palm Pilot, and later created the smart phone market with the Treo smartphone the first smart phone to have a camera, PDA, and also be a phone, hence Treo for 3 functions. Palm stumbled because Hawkins and Dubinsky who helped developed the next generation of PDA, the Vizor after the Palm Pilot wanted to to do an IPO so they could compensated for creating the start up company HandSpring. Instead Palm split the company into two parts, one part of the company did software for the Palm OS platfom for PDAs/Smartphones and tried to sell their software to other PDA/Smartphone companies. The other part of the company focused on hardware, and when this did not work out Palm later put the two parts of the company together again. While Palm went through at least 2 restructurings RIM came out with the Blackberry, Microsoft made partnerships with smartphone OEMs which killed Palm's efforts to sell their Palm OS to other smartphone OEMs and the invention of the Iphone was the nail in the coffin for Palm as an independent company. The question now is will RIM, the maker of the Blackberry be eaten or scale up into the netbook market by acquring a small netbook/laptop OEM?

The Blackberry has an installed strong base of users, however between the Iphone, Android, and Microsoft integrating their smartphones with their PCs (Android with Acer, Iphone with Imacs), and Microsoft with Windows 7, the pressure is on for RIM to scale up with the Blackbery or lose ground. Nokia has already made a hardware move by partnering with Intel to create an open source platform for Nokia phones to compete with Android's open source model. The Nokia and Intel open source platform is called Meego. We will be back soon with a report on being a developer for the Windows 7 smartphone platform vs. being a developer for the Android smartphone platform.

The Blackberry & 9/11

Speaking of New York, the recent terrorist attack in Moscow brought back memories for me of the 9/11 attacks and how it helped bring the Blackberry Smartphone and RIM, the maker of the Blackberry to prominence (Our condolences go out to those who lost family members or friends during the Moscow attacks) . Many people do not know that during the 9/11 attacks the twin towers of the World Trade Center had the cell phone towers for the Verizon cell phone network for the New York region on top of the twin towers, and when the twin towers went down many cells phones did not work. I know this because at the time I was working in IT for Edison Schools http://www.edisonlearning.com/; the Edison Schools HQ is based in New York, and my former boss, who transferred to the New York office could not be contacted by his family in Michigan by cell phone, they were able to contact him once I gave his brother his e-mail. However this was not a problem for the users of Blackberries who use a seperate telecom network (RIM is a Canadian company and uses a different telecom network even though they connect with the U.S. cell phone networks). The Blackberry was then used mostly by CEOs and CIOs but during the 9/11 crisis those CEOs & CIOs were able to keep in contact with their troops to do disaster recovery for their IT/telecom systems while other CEOs CIOs lost touch with the troops until cell phone communications for other cell phones were fixed, this made the Blackberry a household name in smartphones from that point on. The Nexus Smartphone & The Android Developer Phone

As we said in our last blog we investigated the technical specifications link of the Nexus One Phone, along with investigating the new Windows 7 smartphones by Microsoft. We concluded during our research that the best phone for our needs is the Android Dev Phone 2. Microsoft Takes Aim at Google with new Smartphone Part II

The biggest news in the telecom world recently is that Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/ has introduced a new smartphone to compete with the new Google http://www.google.com/ phones powered by the android operating system like the Nexus One Phone. In our opinion, Microsoft has an advantage in the application software area of smartphones because of a battle it won during the PC wars of the 1980s-90s. The current smartphone market is similar to the PC market in the 1980s-1990s where you had a battle of operating systems on PCs, except with the smartphones the leaders are Nokia, Google, Apple's IPhone, RIM (the blackberry), Palm and Microsoft. During those battles Microsoft won the business office application software battle with Microsoft Office displacing WordPerfect on the PC and MacWrite on Apple Computers. Microsoft's software position is under assault by the Itunes software model of distributing software to smartphones, but the Microsoft Office 2010 office suite is on the way and is currently in beta testing and we are helping with that test. Toyota's Troubles & GM News along with upcoming Auto Shows

Bob Lutz the former GM http://www.gm.com/ Product Guru once commented that GM had caught up with foreign car companies like Toyota but it would take time for the perceptions' of U.S. car customers to catch up with that fact. It turns out he was right when it come to Toyota http://www.toyota.com/ but this fact was covered up by a media bias against the big 3. An excellent story documenting this fact can be read in DBusiness a Detroit based business magazine. For more info on this story e-mail Mr. R.J. King the editor of DBusiness at rjking@dbusiness.com. The point being because of lax regulation by the National Highway Safety Traffic Association and excellent PR by Toyota people were not aware of problems with the Toyota Prius and other cars by Toyota until they were recently brought to light by a YouTube video of "Steve Wozniak aka The Woz" talking about his Toyota Prius speeding out of control http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u44XjkWgFac and other incidents. Steve Wozniak is the co-creator of the Apple computer with Steve Jobs.

In our opinion, the Toyota Prius problem will turn out to be a computer software/hardware problem, combined with the increased use of consumer electronics in cars like smartphones & Ipods. Just for example, if you are using a computer at home and then start talking on your cell phone, there will be static on your cell phone if you come near your computer (both computers and cell phones are regulated by Federal Communication Commission). This problem with Toyota car quality also represents a change in culture for Toyota. Toyota caught up with the U.S. in car making excellence in the 1970s-80s by using the quality control methods of a U.S. statistician Edward Demming; who helped Toyota to create a quality control engineering culture at Toyota factories and in the executive suite. When Toyota made it a goal in the 1990s- 2004 to surpass GM in sales that represented a shift in culture from a quality control engineering culture to a sales culture at Toyota. This combined with Toyota's Just In Time Inventory system (JIT) to give Toyota an edge. Former GM CEO Jack Smith brought the JIT system to GM after his experience at the NUMMI plant in California, jointly managed by Toyota & GM until recently.

To solve this problem with their cars Toyota has to first admit the problem, not blame the victims here in the U.S. or elsewhere. Second, their engineers need to do engineering root analysis by quantifying the problems where there were accidents or near accidents where the victims are credible with safe driving records and find out the commonalties statistically when there were accidents to try to spot trends like were victims on cell phones/texting, was it hot, and other common factors in the crashes or near crashes. They also need to analyze all the software code in the Toyota Prius line by line and other cars for software bugs. Our condolences go out to the victims of these accidents; these problems show the perils of the increased use of software and processors in cars, and how stringent software testing is needed when software controls or helps to control key car parts like the brakes.

GM News

Ed Whiteacre is a fine engineer and a great executive and I am sure he will set the ship right at GM. However, we in Detroit need to acknowledge the end of an era with the departure of first G. Rick Wagoner former CEO of GM, and more recently Robert (Bob) Lutz Product Guru at GM. Though they are older, they represent what our children must be trained to be in the competitive job market of today & tomorrow; highly skilled, multi-lingual executives at home in foreign cultures. Unknown to many, Rick Wagoner worked in Brazil (GM de Brasil) at GM before becoming the CEO, knows Spanish, and was quite content in Brazil (Brasil) before being chosen to become CEO and later Chairman at GM by Jack Smith the former CEO of GM. Bob Lutz is fluent in German and English and has worked at first GM then BMW, Ford, Chrysler, and as CEO of Exide a battery company. Rick Wagoner took the risk of recruiting an older executive, Lutz. The risk paid off with GM winning product awards with the Chevy Impala, and the Saturn Aura. Wagoner also took the risk of raising health care as a competitive issue for U.S. industry during the 2004 Presidential election, and later took the risk of leading the big 3 to Washington D.C. to ask for help for GM, Ford, and Chrysler. GM was also a good corporate citizen in Detroit under Wagoner, finally revitalizing the riverfront with the River Walk project so that citizens of the City of Detroit http://www.detroitmi.gov/ and the rest of Michigan can enjoy the riverfront with our neighbor, the City of Windsor http://www.citywindsor.ca/ Canada. They did not finish the job, but they laid a strong foundation and left excellent products for Big Ed Whiteacre to take GM to the next level like the release of the Chevy Volt, and more fully integrate telematics (Ed's & board member Pat Russo's speciality) into the automobile of the future. Here's to Rick and Bob and may they soon be recognized for their contributions though the baton has been passed to Big Ed. This blog has been due since the end of the North American International Auto Show http://www.naias.com/, but so much has happened since then we believe you will understand.
In our opinion at the North American International Auto Show Ford had the best technology display. We base this on the fact Ford had Apple computers near their display so that bloggers (like us) could make reports from the auto show which I did in January 2010 when I updated our December 2009 blog while attending the auto show. GM was the sales champion with the model/salesman asking me for my name as I admired the CTS Cadillac.   He knew the options for the Cadillac, the price, and typed in my contact information into a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) from HP and I received a post card from GM in a week or 2 after the show, and I had the feeling if I was ready to buy a CTS he would have sold me one then and there. I also went by the Chrysler and Toyota displays among others at the show.   Toyota has recently had problems with various models and when I first heard of the on and off problem with the brakes we suspected it was a software problem and it may turn out to be a software problem with the Toyota Prius.   Our condolences go out to the families effected by this glitch, but this is no reason for the big 3 to gloat, it shows the perils of the increased use of software and processors in cars, and how stringent software testing is needed when software controls or helps to control key car parts like the brakes. Microsoft's new operating system Windows 7 has a faster adoption rate than Windows Vista and more importantly by having Windows 7 on laptops, and on smartphones gives Microsoft an advantage when you think that Microsoft also has Microsoft Office which most corporate offices in the U.S. use when compared to other smartphone hardware and software makers. Microsoft's Killer Application, GM's Big Ed makes Fast Moves & the 2010 North American International Auto Show Shows Ford's New Tech

The first part of this blog is a continuation of our telecom blog series and will describe Microsoft's true killer application, and no it's not Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Office though both continue to generate a lot cash. The second part of the blog will describe recent moves made by GM in regards to management and Information Technology and will show why Ed Whiteacre as now the Chairman & CEO of GM is truly on top of his game and is the man to lead GM into the future. Now Let us begin our tale......

Microsoft's Killer Application...

There was a time when Microsoft's cash cow was something called DOS (Disk Operating System), DOS was what IBM wanted when they signed the big contract with Microsoft to supply the OS (Operating System) for IBM's first PC (Personal Computer) to compete with the Apple computer. Later when Apple came out with the Mac OS and IBM was trying to make a go of OS/2 to replace DOS, Microsoft came out with Windows to compete with the Mac OS and through excellent marketing and a even better contract the Windows/DOS GUI became the cash cow. (For people who do not know all PC, laptop, and net book makers pay Microsoft a fee for every PC loaded with Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 they ship.)

However due to the Microsoft's anti-trust lawsuit (they still operate under the conditions of the consent decree in the U.S and different decree in the European Union) and substitutes for Microsoft Office that are now available Microsoft's true killer application is..... Microsoft Exchange, their e-mail server. Microsoft Exchange is important because it works on different platforms. The first platform is course desktop, laptop, and net book PCs. The second platform is smart phones, as more people use their smart phones to get their e-mail from home and work. Microsoft's Exchange Server, and Lotus Notes Server are the de-facto e-mail server standards for e-mail servers in the U.S. and Canada along with many other countries though Google's Gmail client and Gmail Server are coming on strong. The features that make Microsoft Exchange Server the superior of the 3 e-mail server choices so far are:

The Microsoft Outlook e-mail client that is on so many PCs, laptop and Servers.
Microsoft's new telecom software called Office Communication Server & SharepointServer.
Microsoft's Partnership with Ford Motor Company on the Sync software for smart phones.

The third point gets into the new technology of telematics, basically the telecom capabilities of cars. GM was first with it's On Star software in the Cadillac, now standard issue for all new GM cars, but Allan Mullaly of Ford & Steve Ballmer of Microsoft allowed Ford to catch up or at least to gain ground on GM in the area of telematics. Nortel which stands for Northern Telecom (the company is based in Canada) was a telecommunications hardware maker which has run into stormy seas but has been rescued by Avaya, formerly a part of the AT&T. This combination of Avaya & Nortel will be able to survive the stormy seas of the telecom market, some of the factors causing waves in the telecom/IT market are:

The growing popularity of VOIP with businesses & Consumers worldwide

Here is a plan for Avaya & Nortel to survive and thrive:

1. Keep your current customers, especially the government. Management of Nortel and Avaya should fan out to their customers in the U.S., Canada, & across the globe & find out what they like, do not like in their current equipment and what they would like to see in the future for products, and services from Avaya & Nortel along with the prices they would be willing to pay for those services.

2. Evaluate current partnerships at Avaya & Nortel for value & make hard decisions. The Microsoft partnership with Nortel is a good start but must be properly leveraged or dropped like a bad habbit. Microsoft's Office Communication Server (OCS) is an excellent product & if OCS is integrated with Avaya's & Nortel's hardware along with Microsoft's smartphone OEMs Avaya & Nortel should be poised for strong growth as the cell phone market continues to expand. Top Avaya & Nortel leadership should make the case to Microsoft's top leadership for concrete commitments and targets for growth with Microsoft, and if Microsoft does not accept this business case, then Avaya should hedge their bets with other smartphone/hardware/software partners like Nokia, RIM (the maker of the Blackberry), and Google's Android alliance for their G-Phone. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) Basics: A communication Revolution

VOIP allows people to make phone calls directly from their computer to other people on the cell phones, land lines, cars and to get both their e-mails & voice mails from their computer or from their phone depending on the software and hardware they are using. There are two software packages you might want to consider when deciding on upgrading your current phone system to take advantage of VOIP to cut your phone costs.

The advantages of using Microsoft Office Communication Server are that more than likely you already have Windows PCs/Laptops/Servers in your business or home. Venture Capitalism in Michigan 2008

The venture capitalism industry in Michigan is finally maturing and becoming a vital part of economic development in the state of Michigan. Thanks to the efforts of Governor Granholm in helping efforts like Tech Town in Detroit, Spark in Ann Arbor and the 21st century venture capital fund which is managed by Credit Suisse a seasoned venture capital firm from a local office in Southfield Michigan; the VC culture in Michigan is reaching critical mass.

Proof that this is happening is the exit strategy of Sensicore™ a start up company spun off from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor also has a major office for Google and is the home to many VCs and angel investors in Michigan. Sensicore Inc. was sold to GE (General Electric) a Fortune 500 Company, the key product for Sensicore are handheld sensors that can detect chemicals in a matters of minutes. Ardesta LLC provided the initial start up funding for Sensicore.

This blog is for business people who are interested in switching to VOIP and people who are not sure they want to switch but would like to know more. The first part of VOIP 101 focused on the basics of what you need for VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) , in other words, what you need to make phone calls from pc to pc, pc to landline, pc to cell phone or vice versa. To see what those basics are again just go back to the previous blog.
One question you need to answer when considering VOIP is what is you PC infrastructure like, in other words is your pc network mostly windows, or mostly Linux/Unix/Mainframe? In case you are not sure go ask your CIO (Chief Information Officer), LAN (Local Area Network) administrator/webmaster, or your PC person. Once you have established this here are our suggestions.
Linux/Unix/Mainframe

Most of the equipment used by your local bell company (AT&T, Verizon, Bell South, etc) is Unix/Mainframe based. The reason being the reliability of Mainframe, UNIX, Linux servers. Linux is a version of Linux that is a part of the open source community. The VOIP solution that we recommend if you use mostly Linux for your business or data center is AsteriskNow?
AsteriskNow? is a software package that gives you a complete PBX (Public Branch Exchange) system that you can install on your Linux server. You can use the Linux command line or you can install the Asterisk GUI (graphic user interface) by going to http://www.mozilla.com and getting Firefox. Firefox is a web browser like internet explorer but it is the open source version and works on Linux, you will need Firefox to install the Asterisk GUI.
In the last Blog we talked about something called TAPI 3.1 a new feature in the new Windows Server Systems that allows for more telecom features in Windows Servers. The equivalent in Asterisk is the PSTN engine. PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. Right now for the most part the software and hardware used for VOIP depends a lot on if your PC network is primarily Windows based or Linux based. The one exception we can think of is Cisco hardware and software which can be adjusted to run on either. VOIP 101

What is VOIP?
VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol.

Why VOIP?
VOIP allows your business to make phone calls from your computer to a computer, cell phone, or a land line. The big reason you should consider VOIP is that VOIP can allow you to save a lot of $$ money on your phone bill, phone equipment, and on IT/Telecommunications maintenance because your phone network/PBX and PC/Server networks converge.

How do I set up VOIP? To set up VOIP you need to have the following:
1. A broadband connection for the internet (Comcast, AT&T, Netzero, AOL)
2. You need to have computers that are connected to the internet

Once you have those 2 things in place then it varies according to the phone and PC set up at your business and MBM Consulting can help you with that. When setting up VOIP you can have softphones where software is installed or downloaded to your computer and you can immediately begin making calls from your computer or laptop. Or if you need to order new phone hardware and you want your employees to be able to see their e-mail, and voicemail on their phones you may want to consider hardware from Cisco. You can also go the other way and have phone calls/voice mails come to the PCs of your employees and reduce the numbers of phones in your office by having your PCs double as phones using the MS Exchange e-mail server in combination with MS Windows Server 2003.

In case you converted to Linux from Windows do not fear you can also still move to VOIP. Once again it all depends on the type of IT and phone set up you have and we at MBM Consulting can help you with that and making the move to VOIP so you can have a quick ROI and use the money saved from your phone bill to put in the bank or deploy to other areas like the sales/marketing department.

MBM Consulting: Windows Vista Vs. Linux

Welcome to MBM Consulting. The IT specialties for MBM Consulting are VOIP, Wireless LANs, the new Microsoft Windows Server System and it's telecommunication abilities. In fact though few people realize it, the new telecom abilities of the Windows Server System and it's client Microsoft Windows Vista are what gives it a slight edge over Linux. We shall now discuss the pros and cons of the Microsoft Windows Server System vs the Linux Server/Linux desktop.

Linux vs. Windows
At one time Linux was unknown and if you suggested migrating to Linux you would have been given a pink slip before they put you in a straight jacket and laughed while security escorted you out of the office. Now that MS Office 2007 does not come preloaded on most PCs as was the case with Windows NT, and Microsoft is moving to a subscription method for MS Windows Vista and MS Office 2007 nobody's laughing when you suggest Linux anymore.

Many Fortune 500 companies at least have a Linux pilot server program if only to get a cost comparison of Windows vs. Linux. The biggest 2 things that show that Linux has made the big time are the following actions by Microsoft:

Microsoft often cites a white paper in magazines like Information Week that Windows offers better long term TCO than Linux and the Microsoft/Novell deal. That deal happened for one reason and one reason only Novell's ownership of the SUSE version of Linux.

Microsoft realized that Linux is a growing threat with Red Hat (a Linux Supplier) making $105.8 million for the fiscal year 2007 3rd quarter, where before they lost money. Second the latest release of Windows Vista and the slow adoption rate by the corporate users of Windows who like Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT and even some Windows 98/95 users who like their old OS and MS Office 1997 just fine. So Microsoft decided if you can not beat them join them and there is a new SUSE Linux CD that comes preloaded with applications/software like Open Office and Mozilla Firefox and designed to look like the Microsoft desktop. Also just like Linux Microsoft will be offering some versions of Windows Vista for download straight from the web.

Microsoft still offers better support, Microsoft Office 2003/07 are better than Open Office, and Linux is still for the technically brave. However Microsoft's deal with Novell is similar to IBM annoucing that it would enter the PC market when Apple was the only game in town. It is reported that Steve Jobs of Apple rejoiced because if IBM was entering the pc market it symbolized to institutional wall street investors the PC was not just a toy anymore.
